Peter Odili, erstwhile governor of oil rich Rivers state (1999-2007) disgraced Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency(EFCC)and Nigerians in two ways:
His ‘perpetual injunction’ defense from prosecution and jailtime disgraced Nigerians; Yes,the most religious nation in the world yet the most corrupt people
And ‘people’ involves not ,only the shameless Judge who gave the then order but worse of all, Nigerians who attend church & mosque everyday but are one of the most dishonest beings on earth when it comes to money.
The Peter Odili case was unprecedented as never before has an Injunction by a judge be made ‘perpetual’. Then, there is Odili’s wife, a Supreme Court judge who refused to do the honourable thing and resign bearing in mind that her status as a judge and her husband being a defendant is conflict of Interest.
In China, North Korea the death penalty applies to Corrupt officials. It is a disgrace that a nation that is the most religious in the world is one of the most corrupt. Chinese and North Koreans do not believe in God but they are a 1,000 per cent godly than Nigerians.
That Nigerians support corrupt politicians is the disgrace of an educated people.’It is Niger-Delta’s money. Talk about your own governor’.the disgrace here is that such defense is made largely by educated persons!
Of course, Odili is not Nigeria’s first corruption disgrace and it won’t be the last .Knowing what we know now or in retrospect, the worst enemy of Nigerians are religious leaders. If Nigerians spend more time in religious houses and men of God can’t condemn corrupt governors who also attend church & mosque, then such is a disgrace to God .
